Serayna thought on the edge of the cliff, thinking back on the past year... wondering how this had all come about. Before a year ago she had a life that was respectful and nothing really came jumping out at her. NOw things were different.
When she had been a thief before life had been good. She enjoyed stilling from people. But now everything was just confusing...
People were scared of her. They thought she was an angry hateful person who wanted to fight all the time. But she wasn't. She was peaceful, someone who knew when they needed to be forceful.
And now that Serayna was a princess she no longer could be a thief. She had to be a queen. And a good one at that. She needed to bring peace to her land and courage and pride to her people.
As Serayna thought about her undeniable future, tears ran down her face. She had enjoyed the life of a servant. She enjoyed working for every inch of pleasure she received. She didn't want things to be given to her. She wanted it to mean something.
She looked down at the town beneath her. A band was playing in the town square. They were good. They had just finished a song, and it came to a sort of slow song. She heard all the instruments clearly.
She had been crying before and as the band played a story played out in her mind. The story turned bitter, a love story gone tragic. Not unlike Romeo and Juliet but instead of suicide, it was murder. Revenge seethed through the music and the instrument she dreaded listening to gave new meaning to the music. The trumpet sounded hurt and mad. Whoever was playing was good.
Serayna looked closer and found that there was actually a play going on and her mind had been right. Almost to a second by second play. Then she realized Anne was watching this play from the Queen's box and it was just her tapping into Anne's mind for the scenes.
Serayna laughed a little and saw Anne's glance flicker towards her. As a werewolf Serayna's hearing and sight was improved as was Anne's because she was a vampire.
The end of the play came, and the girl was already dead, but the guy who sought revenge was now lying hurt and broken on the floor. He had a trumpet in his hand and as he got up brought it to his lips.
A sound came out that shuddered down Serayna's spine. It wasn't high pitched, it wasn't out of tune. But it filled her mind with sorrow and made her want to cry. This actor was a good player. As the orchestra let go of a very long note, they played one last measure and a disanate chord. The player let out a wail.
When it reached Serayna's ears, she realized he was saying, 'Melina.' Serayna's mortal name. She leaned forward a bit too much as she strained her already strained eyes to see who it was...
She felt a sinking feeling, as if she was falling through nothingness, when she realized she was falling. To her very untimely death.
